Speech by Her Excellency the President of India, Shrimati Pratibha Devisingh Patil, at the Presentation of Standard to 108 Sqn and Helicopter Unit
Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, : 25.03.2009
It gives me immense pleasure to be with you today, at Air Force Station Gorakhpur, to present the Presidential Standards to 105 Helicopter Unit and 108 Squadron. These two Units of the Indian Air Force have rendered distinguished service to the nation over the last fifty years and have excelled themselves in their respective fields. The personnel manning these Units are an embodiment of dedication, professionalism, courage, selfless service and sacrifice. The nation honours them today with a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation.
We are aware that a strong defence and an offensive potential are essential to secure our borders and to safeguard the sovereignty of our nation. Our Armed Forces, exemplified by its brave personnel who stand before us, reflect our determination to protect our interests. We do not wish to be involved in any conflict, but should it be thrust upon us, I am confident that our Armed Forces will rise to the occasion and bring glory to the nation.
105 Helicopter Unit popularly known as the Daring Eagles, is the second oldest helicopter unit of the IAF. Since its raising in November 1959, the Unit has actively participated in the India-China War in 1962 and the India-Pakistan conflicts in 1965 and 1971, as well as in Sri Lanka military operations from 1987 to 1988. The Unit has also undertaken humanitarian relief operations on numerous occasions, across the length and breadth of our country. I am pleased to note, that the unit was awarded a Citation for its significant contribution towards Aid to Civil power in 2006. It has truly lived up to its motto of 'AAPATSU MITRAM', therefore, 'A Friend in Time of Need.'
108 Squadron was raised in November 1959. The Squadron has participated actively in every operation since then, from the Liberation of Goa to the India-Pakistan Wars of 1965 and 1971 and the Kargil operations. The Squadron has shown perseverance and tenacity as proclaimed in the motto of the Squadron 'SHODHAN AUR AKRAMAN' therefore, 'Search and Strike'. I am given to understand, that the Squadron is presently entrusted with the important task of shaping the future of the Indian Air Force, by training young fighter pilots before they join frontline fighter squadrons. I am confident that the young pilots will emulate the deeds of their illustrious predecessors, and imbibe the spirit behind the IAF Motto, of "Touching the Sky with Glory".
My special felicitations to both, the Central Air Command and the South-Western Air Command, under whose stewardship 105 Helicopter Unit and 108 Squadron have put up a very impressive parade. In recognizing the services of these units, the nation also acknowledges the immense contribution of the Indian Air Force. I also extend my felicitations to all the Air Warriors and their families for their continued service and sacrifice to the nation.
Jai Hind.
