Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma served as the ninth President of India, holding office from July 25, 1992, until July 25, 1997. Born on August 19, 1918, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Sharma's long and distinguished political career contributed significantly to the development of the nation.
Dr. Sharma completed his early education in Bhopal before obtaining his Masters in Law from Agra University. Furthering his academic pursuits, he studied at the University of Cambridge, where he was awarded a PhD in Law. Later, he studied at Harvard Law School and was called to the Bar from Lincoln's Inn, London.
Dr. Sharma started his career in academia, serving as a professor of Law at Bhopal University, before making his foray into politics. He was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly thrice and served as the Chief Minister of the state from 1956 to 1957.
In 1971, he was elected to the Lok Sabha and served as the Minister of Communications from 1974 to 1977. He also held the portfolio of Minister of Human Resource Development and Minister of Education in the Union Government.
In 1984, Dr. Sharma was elected as the eighth Vice President of India, serving in that role for two terms until he was elected as the President of India in 1992. As the President, he upheld the constitutional duties of the office with grace and dignity. He was respected for his legal acumen and was known for his sound judgment on constitutional matters.
Dr. Sharma was also a noted poet and writer. His eloquence, combined with a keen intellect and strong sense of ethics, was evident in his speeches and writings.
Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma passed away on December 26, 1999. His legacy of dedication to the nation and his deep understanding of the Indian Constitution continue to inspire many.
